Introduction: Diversity in nursing leadership fosters innovation and creativity within the workforce. Thus, it is imperative that healthcare organizations, particularly senior leaders within those organizations, embody diversity.  A diverse workforce of leaders has been shown to improve patient outcomes and reduce health disparities. Many healthcare institutions have acknowledged the benefits of intentional programs and the need for a workforce that reflects the diverse patient populations that serve.

Dewi Brown-DeVeaux, DNP, BS, RN-ONC, is a Director of Nursing at NYU Langone Health and an Adjunct Clinical Professor at New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing. Brown-DeVeaux earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Yale University, M.S. in Nursing Administration from New York University, B.S. in Nursing from Molloy College, and B.S. in Healthcare Management from Stony Brook University. 

Brown-DeVeaux has over 16 years of healthcare experience as a leader, educator, consultant, policy specialist, and clinician across multiple nursing services. She is deeply committed to eliminating health and healthcare disparities in underserved populations. In addition, she recognizes that a diverse healthcare workforce, including the representation of ethnic minorities in senior nursing leadership through intentional mentorship, is needed to increase cultural competence and quality patient care. 

Brown-DeVeaux is actively engaged in community services. Brown-Deveaux, through organization collaboration, was essential in inoculating over 40,000 COVID vaccination in underserved communities to minimize vaccination hesitancy. Additionally, she was instrumental in disbursing $24,000 of scholarship funding to minority nursing students seeking their LPN, RN, MS, DNP, or Ph.D. She currently serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion advisory council for Eastern Northern Research society, Future in Nursing Campaign for Action – Diversity collaborative, New York Organization of Nurse Executive and Leaders (Mentorship, Diversity, and Policy Council) and she is the 2nd Vice President of the Greater New York City Black Nurses Association.  

Brown-DeVeaux Doctor of Nursing Practice project is Utilizing a Mentorship Approach to Address Underrepresentation of African Americans, and Ethnic Minorities in Senior Nursing Leadership seeks to develop a mentorship program for ethnic minority nurse leaders that integrates, The Leadership Institute of Black Nurse's principles for nurse leaders who aspire to climb the nurse executive ladder. The program is intended to promote the self-efficacy and self-confidence of ethnic minority nurse leaders and formalize a career pathway leading to a senior leadership position.
