Stroke, Stroke, Stroke Your Brain… A Look at Strokes in the Pediatric Population

When people hear the word stroke, the patient that often comes to mind is an older adult, perhaps with a history of various co-existing conditions. Unfortunately, strokes can be very real to all patient populations. In this session, we are going to explore the impact of stroke in the pediatric population. We will examine the differences in symptomology and outcomes compared to the adult population as well as considerations for the unique impacts of strokes on childhood growth and development.

Kristina Hoerl is a Master’s prepared Registered Nurse with more than 35 years of nursing experience in ambulatory care, community health, psychiatry, pediatrics and the imaging environment. She began her radiology career at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1999 as a staff nurse for Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology.  Since that time, she also served as departmental nursing supervisor and acting nurse manager.  Currently she is the Nurse Educator for the Department of Radiology at Hopkins East Baltimore campus.  In this role, she serves the education needs of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology nursing staff as well as supports education for the radiology technologists and radiologists. Additionally she chairs a multi-entity, multi-disciplinary group working to harmonize Radiology policies throughout The Johns Hopkins Health System.

Ms. Hoerl received her certification in radiology nursing in 2010 and her certification in Nursing Professional Development in 2018. She was awarded the Radiology Nurse of the Year award from ARIN in 2017. She was named one of Baltimore’s Top Nurses in 2018 by Baltimore Magazine. She is a published author and a highly reviewed speaker at local, national, and international nursing events. She served ARIN as Director of Education from 2018-2021; and continues to serve a member of the Master Faculty for the Imaging Nurse Review Course and is currently ARIN’s President-Elect.
