Poster Presentation:

Customizing the IPASS to Improve Communication and Patient Safety

Sunday, June 12, 2022

2:30pm - 3:30pm ET

Our poster presentation will be an overview of the IPASS as a standardized method of communication that was customized to the specific area of Interventional Radiology.  Effective communication can present a challenge in procedural areas, therefore we utilized the IPASS method to streamline information to improve patient care and safety.  Common gaps in communication with patient care will be discussed as well as the benefits a standardized tool offers.

I am a level II staff RN at Boston Children’s Hospital in the Interventional Radiology (IR) department since 2017.  I graduated nursing school in 1997 and worked briefly in the adult rehabilitation setting before relocating to Germany with my husband who was in the United States Army.  There, I worked in as an RN in the medical clinic treating soldiers and their family members for three years.  In 2000, we relocated back to the United States where I worked in a Level III/IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Columbia, South Carolina.  When we moved to Savannah, Georgia, I continued to work in the level III NICU as a staff nurse and charge nurse there.  In 2004, I moved back to my home in the Boston area and started to work in the Level III/IV NICU at Boston Children’s Hospital.  In the NICU, I had the opportunity to work as a charge nurse for many years, serve as a member of the infection prevention committee, and participate in multiple posters that were accepted for conferences as well as a published article. After I transitioned to IR in 2017, I have had the opportunity to serve in the clinical resource role as well as become a facilitator for the Simulation program to teach and resource staff.
