The More You Know

The More You Know poster presentation is a demonstration of how collaboration between radiology staff and nurses can improve patient care and the experience of the patient. The presentation is an overview of my time spent with nursing students during their clinical rotation observing the radiology department. The students were asked 5 questions on arrival to the department and again after observing. All of the students expressed a greater knowledge of the department but more importantly a greater understanding of the radiology process after their experience. Allowing the students to observe and interact with the technologists of the CT and MRI departments created a greater understanding of their roles and the knowledge necessary in completing their work. The literature supports improved collaboration between nursing and radiology and improves the patient care experience. The implication of this small study is to encourage nursing orientations to include radiology in their curriculum for not only patient safety, but satisfaction.

Lisa Cassioppi completed her Bachelors of Science Degree, graduating cum laude from Northern Illinois University in Nursing over thirty years ago. Lisa has spent the majority of her career in the Emergency Room including both inner city trauma centers to smaller community hospitals in the Chicagoland area. Over the years Lisa has earned the reputation of being a resource for unique procedures and situations because of her broad knowledge base and skill level. Her ability has come from years of not only asking the “why” questions but validating the answers. Lisa is now the charge nurse in an ambulatory radiology department for Loyola Center for Health in Burr Ridge, Illinois. In this role she is able to demonstrate her passion for quality patient care and educate others to improve the patient care experience.
