Education Update
(Editor’s note: ARIN members have several educational resources at their fingertips. Do you know what they are? Below are excerpts from the 2018-2019 ARIN Historical Report submitted by ARIN Secretary, Cathy Brown BScN, RN, CRN, outlining some resources and future educational plans. The complete report can be found on the ARIN website at: https://www.arinursing.org/about/historical-reports/).
ARIN has always been an advocate of the educational needs of the Radiology nurse. To meet the educational needs of imaging nurses during 2018, the following ARIN benefits were offered:
Archived webinars: 14 credits from 14 webinars
Continuing Education Modules: 4.5 credits from 4 modules
Directed Readings in JRN: 19.5 credits from 14 articles
2018 Convention: 48.5 credits
Annual Convention:
The 2018 Annual Convention was held in in Los Angeles, CA. The Board presented the Joanna
Po Lecture for the sixth consecutive year. It featured Kristina Hoerl and Mikki Warner speaking
on “Totally Rad Introductory Competencies”.
In addition, ARIN teamed up with the Association of Vascular and Interventional Radiographers (AVIR) for a joint education day and welcome reception at the beginning of the conference, which was an excellent opportunity for interaction and collaboration for teams practicing in the radiology environment. The AVIR Gold Medal Lecture, “Why You Should Care: The Evolving Role of IR and Splenic Artery Emobilization: Different Indications and Different Techniques” was presented by Wael Saad.
Seven other sessions were presented that day on a variety of topics including 3D printing and talk strategies for stress management. Two joint sessions with SIR were held on the last day, Conscious about Sedation and Emerging Concepts in Radioembolization for HCC.
Kathy Sheffer, one of the original creators of the Imaging Review Course, retired from nursing this year and will no longer be part of the Master Faculty. She will be missed. We will always owe a debt to her for her hard work, dedication, and patience to this project.
The IRC continue with 4 Master Faculty, Lauren Miller and Pauline Lentowski, both from Arizona, Ellen Arslan from Florida, and Kristina Hoerl from Maryland.
A total of 7 live IRC courses were completed in 2018 and three in 2019 at the time of convention. This includes the course held in connection with the ARIN convention in March.
One course was a live‐remote course. Two of the Master Faculty traveled to Canada where ARIN’s strategic partner Medlantis live‐streamed the presentation overnight to the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi. This course was professionally videotaped at that time to be formatted as a virtual IRC course. The virtual course is currently available on the ARIN website for purchase.
In addition to classes, ARIN offers print and electronic resources. These include:
ARIN has a variety of publications available to purchase on the website under Resources – ARIN publications:
ARIN Core Curriculum 3rd edition – available in print edition and eBook
CRN Prep: The Practical Study Guide – in spiral bound or eBook
Orientation Manual for Radiologic and Imaging Nursing – in three ring binder formats
Scope and Standards of Practice ‐ Radiologic and Imaging Nursing: print edition
ARIN launched its first app in the fall of 2017 which has been utilized to provide added connection between ARIN and its membership including access to the CE Platform as well as all information related to the annual convention.
Staffing guidelines and capnography guidelines were published and uploaded to the ARIN website where they can be found under “Resources –Practice Guidelines and Position Statements”.
What does 2019 hold? Our future is bright. ARIN 2019 educational plans include:
Fall Symposium:
The board has planned a fall symposium, which will be held in Columbus Ohio. It will include 12 Credits, an IRC review course, and AVIR courses. The expected outcome is to provide education for all modalities.
The IRC was made available in January 2018 as a virtual course. Approximately 20 members have taken advantage of this to date.
The process of updating the Core Curriculum has begun and an initial call for authors was sent in November.
